The number of pages a search engine will crawl on your site within a given timeframe.
Crawl budget is the number of pages Googlebot (or any search engine crawler) will crawl on your site in a given time period. Google allocates a budget based on your site's size, health, and importance.
For most small to medium sites, crawl budget isn't something to worry about. Google can usually crawl all your pages without issues. But for large sites with thousands or millions of pages, crawl budget becomes critical.
Things that waste crawl budget include: duplicate content, infinite URL parameters, orphan pages, crawling resources that shouldn't be crawled (like admin pages), and redirect chains. If Googlebot spends time on low-value pages, it has less time for your important ones.
You can influence crawl budget through your robots.txt file, internal linking structure, sitemap, and site speed. A faster site means Googlebot can crawl more pages in less time. Clean URL structures without parameter bloat help too.
Why It Matters for SEO
If search engines can't crawl your important pages, they can't index them, and they can't rank them. For large sites, poor crawl budget management means new content takes longer to get indexed and old content might get dropped from the index.
