Structured Data

Organized code that helps search engines understand your page content and display rich results.

Structured data is a standardized format for organizing and labeling information on your web pages so search engines can understand it better. It bridges the gap between human-readable content and machine-readable data.

Think of it this way: a human reading your recipe page knows the cooking time is 30 minutes, but a search engine just sees text. Structured data explicitly labels "30 minutes" as the cooking time, so Google can display it in a recipe rich snippet.

The most common structured data format is JSON-LD using the Schema.org vocabulary. Google supports many Schema.org types including Article, Product, LocalBusiness, FAQ, HowTo, Event, Recipe, Review, Breadcrumb, and more.

You can validate your structured data using Google's Rich Results Test tool. It shows you which rich result types your page is eligible for and flags any errors in your markup.

Adding structured data doesn't guarantee rich results — Google decides when to show them. But without structured data, you're definitely not eligible for most rich result types.

Why It Matters for SEO

Structured data is the foundation of rich results in Google search. It helps search engines understand your content precisely, improves your chances of earning enhanced search features, and can significantly increase your click-through rate.
