Click-Through Rate (CTR)
The percentage of people who click on your link after seeing it in search results.
Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who see your search result and actually click on it. If your page appears in search results 1,000 times and gets 50 clicks, your CTR is 5%.
CTR depends heavily on your position in search results. The #1 result gets roughly 27-30% of clicks, #2 gets about 15%, and it drops fast from there. By position 10, you're looking at around 2-3%.
But position isn't everything. A compelling title tag and meta description can dramatically increase your CTR even from lower positions. Rich snippets, star ratings, FAQ schema, and other search enhancements can also make your result stand out.
You can find your CTR data in Google Search Console under the Performance report. Filter by specific pages or queries to see which results are underperforming. If a page ranks well but has a low CTR, improving its title and description is a quick win.
Why It Matters for SEO
Higher CTR means more traffic from the same rankings. There's evidence that CTR is a ranking signal — pages that get clicked more may get a rankings boost. Improving CTR is one of the fastest ways to increase organic traffic without building more links or content.
