Core Web Vitals
Google's metrics for measuring page experience: loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability.
Core Web Vitals are three specific metrics Google uses to measure how users experience your web pages. They became an official ranking factor in 2021. The three metrics are:
**Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)** measures loading performance — how quickly the main content of a page loads. A good LCP is under 2.5 seconds.
**Interaction to Next Paint (INP)** measures interactivity — how quickly your page responds when users click, tap, or type. A good INP is under 200 milliseconds. (This replaced First Input Delay in 2024.)
**Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)** measures visual stability — whether elements on the page jump around as it loads. A good CLS score is under 0.1. You know that annoying thing where you're about to click a button and it moves? That's layout shift.
You can check your Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights, or Chrome DevTools. Field data (from real users) matters more than lab data (from testing tools).
Why It Matters for SEO
Core Web Vitals are a confirmed Google ranking factor. Pages that provide a better user experience get a rankings boost. Beyond SEO, better vitals mean faster pages, happier users, and higher conversion rates. It's a win-win.
