Open Graph
Meta tags that control how your page appears when shared on social media platforms.
Open Graph (OG) is a protocol created by Facebook that controls how your web pages look when shared on social media. When someone shares your URL on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or messaging apps, Open Graph tags determine the title, description, image, and other details that appear in the preview.
The key Open Graph tags are: og:title (the title shown in the share), og:description (the description), og:image (the preview image — arguably the most important one), og:url (the canonical URL), and og:type (the content type, usually "website" or "article").
Without Open Graph tags, social platforms try to guess what image and text to use, and the results are often ugly or wrong. With OG tags, you control exactly how your content appears when shared.
For the og:image, use an image at least 1200×630 pixels for the best display across platforms. Include text overlays that are readable at small sizes. This image is often the first thing people see, so make it count.
Why It Matters for SEO
While Open Graph tags don't directly affect search rankings, they significantly impact how your content performs on social media. Attractive share previews get more clicks, more shares, and more referral traffic — all of which indirectly support SEO.
